Monitoring Adwords with Google Analytics

August 21, 2007 - Gyuri van de Bilt

Using Google’s integration of Adwords and Analytics will allow you to see the statistics of visits that originated from a Google ad.

Setting up Adwords statistics in Analytics
Clodagh Kelly explains how to link Google Analytics and Adwords; in short:

  1. Log into Adwords and click into the preferences tab
  2. Select “I already have an analytics account”
  3. From the “Existing Google accounts” select the website you want to link up
  4. Check the boxes you want to retain
  5. Click “Link account”

It might take some time before you see your Adwords statistics in Analytics, this may take up to a couple of days. So you may see no results and empty reports for a day or two.

Tips
Some tips he shares when linking Google Analytics and Adwords are:

For your consideration
When linking Analytics and Adwords, the Analytics reports will show statistics for the keywords you bid on in Adwords. This means the actual keywords (or keyword combinations) used by the visitor are not shown. Too bad this is not visible in Analytics, because this information would be great to optimize your campaign by adding more specific keyword combinations. These actual search keywords are however available by using Adwords reports.

Last but not least, when stakes are high -as in many corporate environments- you have to outweigh the added value of using Analytics against giving Google even more insight in your websites performance and the relevance of your ads!
